Game Mechanics

Here are some more detailed explanations for various terms and mechanics related to gameplay.

☾ LUNAR SEDATA SYNDROME [LSS]
LSS is a growing mental disease that begins to show as minor, harmless bouts of memory loss. As time progresses, memories seem to fragment and blur in to nothingness. Patients also often find themselves sleepwalking or unaware of where they are. Eventually, time begins to seem meaningless and patients begin to forget their own faces.

LSS coincides with the phases of the moon. When the moon becomes full and bright, patients often find themselves seeking the comforting light it gives. When the rotation is complete and the moon is new, the island becomes tense with the screams and cries of what sound like people. The longer you stay on the island, the more you depend on the light of the moon.

As a bit of reiteration, the stages of LSS progress in severity of these overlapping symptoms over time:
memory impairment
Initial symptoms include mild memory impairment, forgetting mundane activities or minor events. It eventually progresses into forgetting important things, events, places, and people.
wandering around at night
Sufferers will start wandering around during the middle of the night and sleepwalking.
dependence on the moon
The phases of the moon affect patients. At times when the moon is less visible, symptoms will become worse or agitated. Patients will often seek out the moonlight.
fear of mirrors
A more advanced symptom, also known as Budding (see the section on budding below). Patients become frightened of their own reflection.
obsessive behaviour
Not a common symptom with every patient. Patients may form deep attachments to certain items. Some will collect multiple objects, whereas others will cling to one in particular and keep it with them at all times.
externalizing the self
Not a common symptom with every patient. A few patients, feeling that they are losing their identity, will use a doll or other item to "store" part of themselves, believing that by doing so, it will not change.
suicide/death
Some patients kill themselves deliberately so they will not have to face the loss of all their memories. Others endanger themselves trying to get closer to the moon, and die accidentally. Others eventually reach the Blooming stage (see the section on blooming below) and die of cardiac arrest soon after.

budding
Budding is known as the first phase of dying from LSS. Budding causes extreme confusion in patients, making it impossible for them to recognize their own face. Patients are known to become aggravated and often take their anger out on other patients of the hospital in search of their face, or just to figure out who they are.

There have been cases and incidents of people 'Budding' and nearly ripping the faces off other hospital patients. This is also why most of the spirits seen in the hostpial are missing their faces or are wearing masks.

blooming
This is the final stage of LSS. Blooming is considered to be a walking curse. Most of the patients that have hit the 'Blooming' stage have passed away. In order to keep a patient who has died in the 'Budding' stage from 'Blooming', their faces are removed and made into masks. A 'Blooming' patient is seen with a completely distorted face, and acting more insane than patients who are 'Budding'.

☾ ROGETSU SANATORIUM & HAIBARA HOSPITAL
The Sanatorium is where your character initially awakens. Character rooms are clean, tidy and plain, with no signs of dust or age, but once they step outside your character is faced with the horror that awaits. Outside, it seems as if time has ravished the place. Everything has seemingly been abandoned and left to decay in solitude under the unforgiving progression of time.

The nurses' stations seem to be forgotten. Medical documents on characters are scattered about and stained with what appears to be dried blood. Every now and then a wail or a cry can be heard, as well as the more chilling sounds of children giggling. Around every corner you swear you hear the chime of a bell or the bounce of a ball with the giggles and murmurs of children. But, as you see it, the hospital is vacant of everyone except for the new patients that find themselves here.

cursed paintings
While staying in the sanatorium, a man is said to have made various paintings of a woman in crimson red with her face smudged out. It seemed this man had an obsession with this woman. However, he also created paintings of five little girls with faces covered in masks. What are the meanings behind these paintings?

☾ CULTURAL PRACTICES
day without suffering
Documents that will be found throughout the game inform that there were two significant days, known as "The Day Without Suffering". This was known as a ritual that went wrong and killed those involved. Because of that, speaking about the ritual was taboo. Documents found date the second ritual on September 17, 1972. Brochures are found scattered throughout the island that tell of the ritual and an invitation to behold it. However, the papers are old and worn in with age.

On the paper there seems to be something called "Ceremony of Passage".

Ceremony of Passage: The Ceremony of Passage can also be found in documents that characters will find in time. The Ceremony is the main ritual of the island where a woman is selected to dance with the help of five young girls. The woman turns into a vessel for the spirits to flow through on the night of the eclipse, allowing them to pass on to the next world. However, with no vessel, spirits roam the island in a vengeful rage. When the Ceremonies had failed, they triggered both of the "Days Without Suffering".

Masks: Masks are seen as a vital part of the culture of the island. Traditional masks decorate every hallway of the hospital, as well as temples that are seen on the island. Texts and nurse notes suspect that because of patients that "Bud" and "Bloom", they keep masks around to keep patients from unleashing the curse upon the island. As one can see, it failed, so the masks lay in dust with cracks and paint chipping.

Masks are often made from human skin of people who have died before them. The skin is stretched and tanned to look almost like leather so masks are either wooden or made of human skin. One may never know. [Unless stated]

☾ SPIRIT RADIOS

In every room a patient resides in is a Spirit Radio with a Moonstone inserted into it. Moonstones are seen as charms of luck on Rogetsu Island, and the stones contain spiritual properties. What this means is that the owner of the Moonstone is able to transmit his or her thoughts and messages into their particular stone, and using the radio as a conductor and transmitter, can broadcast these messages to others. This spiritual transmission is passive and does not require any extra effort on your character's part.

On the radios are a number of dials and type pad. Enter or record your message and the stone broadcasts it. If you wish to send something private or locked to another patient, just punch in their room number and you will have a direct line open to one another. This works with multiple patients as well.

Utilizing strong spiritual connection to power the device, it is also susceptible to interference from other powerful supernatural forces...
